BAR TRAINING COURSE
What is the BTC?
The Bar Training Course (BTC) is the vocational stage of training for aspiring barristers in England and Wales. It is the pathway that prepares law graduates for a career at the Bar, equipping them with the necessary practical skills and legal knowledge to succeed as a barrister. The BTC has replaced the former Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) as part of reforms to make the process of becoming a barrister more flexible and accessible.
Key Features of the BTC
Practical Skills Training
The BTC focuses heavily on developing the essential practical skills required of a barrister, including advocacy, drafting legal documents, conferencing, and opinion writing.
Assessment Structure
The BTC includes a mix of written exams and practical assessments. Key areas of assessment include Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation, Professional Ethics, and Advocacy. Practical skills are often assessed through live performances in simulated court settings.
Pupillage Preparation
A key goal of the BTC is to prepare students for pupillage, the final stage of training to become a barrister. The course offers guidance on securing pupillage and developing the competencies needed for this crucial period of practical training.
